How a Sewage Pump Works

The role of the sewage pump is to eject wastewater and toilet waste out of the property and into either the municipal sewer system or private septic. Usually installed in the basement in a sealed pit, or in a holding tank outside, most modern sewage pumps are housed in plastic or fiberglass, though older models may be placed in a metal pit. In some cases, there may be a backup sewage pump installed that can take over if the initial pump fails.

When wastewater enters the pit, it accumulates to a certain predetermined level, causing a float to rise in the process. When the float reaches a critical level, a float switch activates the pump, forcing the wastewater into the next tank or into a drain, depending on the configuration. In some cases, if the system encounters issues, an alarm will sound.

The Role of a Grinder Pump

The sewage pump relies on gravity to get the wastewater out of the house or commercial area. What happens though, when the water has to be elevated to get it properly distributed into the main municipal system? A grinder pump may be the answer.

The grinder pump is in the family of the sewage pump, while not being exactly the same—think of the grinder pump as the first cousin of the sewage pump.

Grinder pumps are more powerful than sewage pumps and can handle larger volumes of wastewater with greater efficiency. They also require less maintenance since they don't need to be cleaned as often as sewage pumps.

The topography of the property may make the need for a grinder pump evident at the time of installation—for example, a home built in the valley at Little Sandy Hollow may obviously require a grinder pump to elevate their wastewater for ejection. For homes or offices where the layout doesn’t make it immediately apparent, some tipoffs to watch for are whether or not a musty smell starts to gather in the air and water pressure that seems to be working slowly.

Our Navarre grinder pump plumbers can advise on the best possible solution for each situation and deliver reliable installation work.

Common Sewage Pump Issues

If there is an older sewage pump housed in a metal pit, the metal will corrode over time and leak sewage and foul odors into the basement. Another source of sewage odor and backups can be a simple pump failure, causing wastewater to build up until it leaks onto your floor. In both cases, call for repair or replacement immediately, before the situation worsens.

Other sources of sewage pump failures involve failures in the check valve and float switch. If they activate too frequently, the pump may wear out prematurely. If they fail to activate at all, the system can overflow. Sometimes, if bulky items like feminine hygiene products, masses of toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, and others, enter the system, they can clog the discharge pipe or pump, and even damage the float.
